The Lanius CMS rebranding is taking us more time than forecast; this is a short update about the rebranding process status:
- Subversion repository is up and running, but the full Drake CMS Subversion repository has not yet been imported because of reorganization needs
- bug and feature trackers are being imported in the new Lanius CMS tracker system; currently only the feature tracker has been fully imported and therefore it has been closed on Drake CMS SF.net project
- the logo contest has brought us 4 candidates, 2 of them were very promising and we have asked authors to slightly modify their design; the winner of the logo contest will be announced in a couple of weeks, or sooner we hope, and then all people who partecipated with correct logo submissions will be publicly thanked
- the new website will integrate various services with a single-sign-on which is already deployed; we are tuning the small bits of the new system before activating it
- the documentation and internationalization have been paused; we are looking for help with documentation and development, please drop us a note if you are interested.
We are also working (thanks to rsavarese) to better templates CSS and improvements to the packages install system; the first Lanius CMS release will show some cool news and integration with webservices is essential for the easy online update process; that's why the first release cannot be launched if we don't yet have a working webservices platform. The development and releases cycles will happen faster than Drake CMS and so we need a rock solid updates system.
Hold tight!

Drake CMS project lifetime
Official development on the Drake CMS project has ceased on 5 February 2008; this is a formal statement, since development continues for both software support and rebranding.
Development
Active development on the new project will begin as soon as the new development services will be ready; this will be a painless migration, you (from the user's point of view) will only notice a delay before the next release.
All current project members will be specifically addressed to the new development facilities when more informations will be available; we will keep some services here at SourceForge.net and some (the website, for example) on the server kindly provided by consc198.

Foreword
Drake CMS v0.4.11 RC8 has been released.
This version is a major feature enhancement and stabilization release update for version 0.4.10 RC7; it contains major bugfixes and major improvements.
Major Changes
This is a short, not complete, list of the changes:
- users impersonating the editor role can modify only their own creations and also publish them
- submissions are limited to registered users only
- all elements have ownership
- major improvements to comment drabot
- improved mass operations
Availability
The download packages are available at the SourceForge.net project downloads section .
An automatic update file, update_from_v0.4.11_RC7_to_v0.4.11_RC8.zip, is provided to automatically update the software (PHP/misc files); this patch must be installed through the "Install patch" menu item, or via Online Updates. DO NOT overwrite the previous version of the software using the files contained in the patch archive, it won't work.
Subsites update
After update of the root website it is necessary to update each subsite clicking on the apposite "Update" button available in the administrative backend.
Backward compatibility
Drake CMS v0.4.11 Beta RC8 has full database backward compatibility with previous versions of Drake CMS and also supports database imports from Limbo CMS.
There is not and there will not be software compatibility with other CMSes, although software/database conversion from some of the Mambo-family CMSes is easy enough. We have ongoing projects about these conversions (and also for other CMSes), join the forums to discuss about it.
Manual update instructions
In order to manually update Drake CMS to Drake CMS v0.4.11 RC8 you should proceed as follows:
- make a database backup and download it on your local computer (or get it via FTP, at your option); this backup should be performed as safety measure
- use the tarball backup feature with the "user data only" flag active to create a tarball backup; this backup will contain the whole website directory except Drake CMS source files
- remove all the online website files and directories
- install the latest Drake CMS; in order to speed up the deployment operation (if you are able to upload files to the server only via FTP) you are invited to use the -veloce version of the distribution packages; such operation you can execute PHP scripts which write to file)
- upload the tarball archive files in the website root OR upload the tarball archive into the website root and extract it using the veloce.php script (it simply extracts all the files, overwriting)

Lanius CMS logo competition
All artists and graphic designers are invited to this public competition to design a new project logo for the new project "Lanius CMS" that will supercede the current Drake CMS project.
Entry to the competition is open to all individuals.
The rules of the competition are included below.
We look forward to receiving many varied logo designs from all over the world!
Rules
Purpose
The main logo symbol will be used for the web site, software media labels and so on. This list is not exhaustive.
Guidance
- The logo must be original work of the submitter.
- The logo can be vector graphics or a high definition bitmap image (1200x1200 or more).
- The logo should be usable in monochrome and color media, including limited colors (say 2 or 3 colors).
- The logo must not exploit or offend anyone's sex, race, religion, morality, culture, nor be salacious or pornographic.
The logo should be inspired by the photos and drawings that you can download from the following URL (ZIP archive); you do not necessarily have to use a photo for the logo creation, the essential point is that the logo should be about this bird:
http://drakecms.sf.net/media/cmsnewlogo.zip
This archive might be updated on a weekly basis.
Updated: 3 new photos added 19 January 2008
Submission deadline
18 February 2008 23:59:59 (UTC)

Project rebranding
A new project will be started to rebrand the Drake CMS project and continue its development.

The Drake CMS project development will terminate on 1 February 2008; development on the new project will begin in the same date or soon after. The Drake CMS project will still be supported for at least 2 months to minimize users confusion.
This is a short summary which shall give all users and Team members an overview of the whole operation:
- the software codebase will be imported in a new SVN repository
- development of the new project will lead to the first Stable release, not under the Drake CMS branding but under the new brand and new logo
- the new project name will be revelead on 1 February 2008; a logo contest is open for the creation of the new logo (see below)
- a new official website will be estabilished (thanks to the hosting services freely provided by Constantinos C., C & C Advanced Online Services), although the project will have some facilities at SourceForge.net (under the new project name).
- new project services will be setup (no more SF.net trackers! and yes, a faster website!)
- database backward compatibility and XML/API compatibility is 100%, since it will be exactly the same source code!
In a few words, only the project name changes - the software is FREE and will always be FREE.
Common Questions
These are some common questions that might arise. Feel free to ask more questions on the forums.
Q. Why are you doing this rebranding?
A. The main reason is that we do not own the official brand domains (long story short: the domain owner is virtually dead), hence we cannot update them and releasing a Stable software (v0.5.0) to the public with the brand domains talking about v0.2.4 is a move that will lead to panic and confusion amongst new users.
Q. Will the software become commercial/closed source/etc.?
A. No. It's only Drake CMS with a new name and a new logo. License will be GPL and the versioning will also continue from v0.4.10.
Q. Will the software really be released as Stable?
A. Yes. After almost 2 years of development we are generally satisfied with its quality and are ready to remove the Beta from the version string. v0.4.10 RC6 is the last Release Candidate and last version of Drake CMS.
Q. What to do with my Drake CMS websites?
A. There will be a transition period of 2 months to help current Drake CMS users get used with the new brand, and slowly migrate to the first Stable release under the new brand.
Q. I have worked on a template/translation/component/etc. for Drake CMS.
Will it work with the new project?
A. Yes. It's just the project name which changes.
Q. Will there be the same Team behind the software?
A. Yes, and I hope other people too!
Contest for the new logo
All artists and graphic designers are invited to partecipate to the coming soon logo contest that will be announced in subsequent news.
Right now I can only say the logo will not be about a dragon, but about a bird. You will be given photos of the real animal upon which the logo should be based.

A new default template, by user shekinah, has been added to this release. The software contains some minor and major features, this is a short list of the most useful:
- subsites are much more usable
- new admin backend CSS menu available
- SMTP mailer now works
- the Midas editor has been replaced by the Native editor which is really lightweight and also works on IE
- the custom_logger.php has been deprecated by the new event-based logging mechanism, but it is now possible to specify a custom log file

Availability
The download packages are available at the SouceForge.net project downloads section .
An automatic update file, update_from_v0.4.9_RC5_to_v0.4.10_RC6.zip, is provided to automatically update the software (PHP/misc files) and the database to v0.4.10 RC6; you can install this automatic update in the following ways:
- install the patch from Online Updates (no need to download the archive locally)
- download the archive locally and install the patch uploading the archive
- download the archive remotely and extract the files into a directory, then install the patch from the directory
NOTE: the archive size is 1.3 MB, you are always invited to make a database backup before installing an update patch as the patch may fail for PHP execution timeout constraints (depending on the configuration of your host)
Read also the below "Manual update instructions" before proceeding to any update.
Updated version of the templates will soon be available.
Subsites update
Subsites' database must be manually updated right after the update/reinstall of the root website. You should always update subsites database right after the update of the root website.
Backward compatibility
Drake CMS v0.4.10 Beta RC6 has full database backward compatibility with previous versions of Drake CMS and also supports database imports from Limbo CMS.
There is not and there will not be software compatibility with other CMSes, although software/database conversion from some of the Mambo-family CMSes is easy enough. We have ongoing projects about these conversions (and also for other CMSes), join the forums to discuss about it.
Manual update instructions
There are several reasons for which you might prefer a manual update to an automatic update:
- you have a 30 seconds timeout limit on your PHP host or think that the host is particularly slow for other reasons (flatfile database, etc.)
- you are updating from a version older than v0.4.9 RC5 (the update is only for the previous version)
- your automatic update attempt failed and the website was left in a broken status
In order to manually update Drake CMS to Drake CMS v0.4.10 RC6 you should proceed as follows:
- make a database backup and download it on your local computer (or get it via FTP, at your option); this backup should be performed as safety measure
- use the tarball backup feature with the "user data only" flag active to create a tarball backup; this backup will contain the whole website folder except Drake CMS sources
- remove all the website files and directories
- install the latest Drake CMS (you are invited to use the -veloce version of the distribution packages if you can execute PHP scripts which write to file and can upload files to the server only via FTP)
- upload the tarball archive files in the website root OR upload the tarball archive into the website root and extract it using the veloce.php script (it simply extracts all the files, overwriting)
